About Me

Pélerins Glacier, July 2021 @Nicolas Rouyer

I am a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the French National Research Institute  for Sustainable Development (IRD), currently studying the effects of Andean camelids on proglacial ecosystems develoment, as a strategy for adapting to global warming.

My broad research interests lie in the processes and implications of global change within mountain environments, with a specific focus on proglacial landscapes. I study how physical, ecological, and social processes interact to drive ecosystem changes in new alpine proglacial landscapes and how these inform the best adaptation strategies. My research investigates in tandem the processes of primary succession and geomorphological dynamics of proglacial landscapes. I combine plot surveys with macro-scale UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) remote sensing methods. One experiment of the research also introduces grazing animals as a strategy to enhance healthy proglacial ecosystem development. This work aims to advance land use management to maximize adaptation services of young proglacial ecosystems.

Geographically my work has primarily focused on The Tropical Andes, particularly Bolivia’s Cordillera real and Peru’s Cordillera Blanca. However, for my doctoral work, I have expanded my research interests and activity to address similar questions in the French and Swiss Alps, setting up a biogeographical comparison between continents.

Recently, I have started to explore high mountain governance frameworks, and challenges and opportunities to ensure effective and sustainable management of the new landscapes emerging after glacier retreat.

I actively conducted research in the Soils and Geoarchaeology Lab in the Department of Geography.

Over the past four years, I served as Climate Change and Natural Resources Specialist for The Mountain Institute's Andean Program in Peru. I joined TMI in 2014 and I am a current associate fellow of The Mountain Institute.
