Human-Environmental Interactions in Deglaciating Landscapes
Mountain glaciers are projected to largely disappear by the end of the 21st century. Where vanishing glaciers interact with the inhabited landscape, societies face new challenges to ensure water availability, slope stability, energy production, tourism, and other essential ecosystem services. Yet, the new land emerging as a result of glacier retreat presents an opportunity for novel high-alpine ecosystems to migrate upward under the effects of warming.
My dissertation research investigates how physical, ecological, and social processes interact to drive ecosystem changes in alpine proglacial landscapes and how these inform the best adaptation strategies. I mixed explanatory and experimental approaches and employ a multiscale approach that combines in situ plot surveys, near ground remote sensing, soil temperature monitoring, laboratory analyses, and measurements with UAV high-resolution aerial imagery.
Novel proglacial ecosystems: ecological & geomorphic dynamics
First, I study in tandem the processes of primary succession and geomorphological dynamics of nine proglacial landscapes. My study sites include the Peruvian Tropical Andes and the European Alps, setting up a biogeographical comparison between the two continents. I combine floristic and geomorphologic plot surveys with near-ground RGN (Red-Green-Near infrared) remote sensing methods and macro-scale multispectral UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) imagery. Between 2019 and 2021, in collaboration with local partners, we surveyed a total of 620 in situ (2x2m) plots, carried out 188 drone flights, collected 189 soil samples, and buried 113 temperatures sensors within the 9 study sites.

Adaptative strategies for the sustainable development of proglacial landscapes.
Second, I examine how periglacial land management can enhance the ecological transition from recently deglacierized land to productive ecosystems, and therefore reduce risk and enhance climate resilience in deglaciating regions.
I use an experimental approach by studying Andean camelids as seed dispersers, soil fertilizers, and zoogeomorphologic agents, favoring proglacial ecosystem formation. In June 2019, in collaboration with the National Park of Huascarán and the Llama 2000 Asociación we set up a llama grazing experiment at the foot of the Uruashraju glacier (4706masl) in the Cordillera Blanca, Peru. Once a year we evaluate a serie of 64 permanent plot, analyze soil samples and monitor soil temperature.

Through the grazing experiment, we aim to respond to societal problems and concerns and propose solutions that can be implemented at larger scales and for other grazers in mountain systems.
